Choosing a Prom Dress: Tips from a Dressmaker
Prom, short for 'promenade' or parade is coming up very soon for most all high schoolers. Among the many Prom issues and considerations girls will be asking themselves this basic question: Which dress do I choose? What style and color looks best on me? How do I decide? Here is a guide for selecting your formal wear dress based upon your personal body style, shape and coloring. I've garnered these tips from a friend who has been a dressmaker for years. She's seen many styles come and go and knows what looks best all body styles.
There are several basic formal dress designs. They vary in neckline, sleeve style and length and width of skirt. We will look at each separate variable and discuss which body style that they work well for. Click on the different images attached to see the various styles.
Skirt length and width:
flared width/floor length: This is a universal style that anyone can wear. Even if you have a large waistline, the flair will make your waist look smaller and focus attention on the skirt.
narrow skirt/ floor length: Choose this style only if you have nice, curvy hips, not too narrow. A straight skirt on a very thin person will accentuate narrowness. There is a skirt style popular in the teens- 1930's in which the skirt was clingy along the waist and legs and then flared out around the feet. This is a very attractive style when worn with stiletto heels. Many of the cocktail dresses that Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn wear feature this skirt style. This can be worn by almost anyone and it is a great dress style for dancing.
