I get very frustrated when Hollywood insists on driving a once successful series of movies into the ground. In the case of the movie I am about to review, they actually decided to take two separate successful movie series and destroy both of them jointly. I'm talking about the mega-hit series built around "Alien" and the respectable one built around "Predator."A couple of years back someone got the idea to do a film that pitted the creature from "Alien" against the one from "Predator." At the time, I thought it was a bit silly, but I did watch the film and even managed to enjoy bits and pieces of it.
Unfortunately, unlike "Alien Vs Predator," the newest version entitled "AVP (Alien Vs Predator): Requiem" has very little redeeming value. Not the least of its problems is a rather pointless story.
It seems that during the final battle of the "Alien Vs Predator" film, the predator creature was impregnated with one of the alien creatures. Okay, I guess I can sort of understand that even though it does raise the question how such a feat never happened in the thousands of years of battles between the two species in the past.
Second, once the new alien finally bursts out of the chest of its victim, it is not all alien; instead it is a kind of half-breed cross between the two. Again, interesting but I find it strange that similar cross-breeding never took place in the thousands of impregnations between alien and human subjects.
Next, once the creature grows to full size, which happens very quickly, it immediately jumps into a shuttle and sets course back to earth. Why? It seems odd that it would not remain on the ship of its greatest enemy, wiping them out from within.
At any rate, the crossbreed's ship lands in the mountains of Colorado and the creature loses no time in breeding; sending dozens of facehuggers out to impregnate new humans in a nearby town. That, in itself remains true to the story.
However, we get another change in the plot when suddenly not one, but three alien creatures burst from their human hosts. No explanation is given as to why each pregnancy now results in multiple births. Maybe it's just the clean, Colorado air.
