Acupuncture and the Weight Loss Connection

Providing and Overview of This Alternative Treatment in Weight Loss

Acupuncture, in the Chinese culture, has been a common form of holistic medicine for over 5,000 years.  In recent decades, the use of acupuncture has become widely accepted as a holistic approach to the method of weight loss.  Although not considered
a sole means for weight loss, acupuncture is effective, when in combination with diet and exercise, in improving digestive health, relieving stress and anxiety which often lead to emotional eating.

For emotional eaters, acupuncture is particularly effective.  Through the placement of needles, acupuncture works to release endorphins and improve metabolism.  In doing so, the dieter will tend to feel less stress, less anxious and experience less frustration.   With this improvement in mental health, many dieters will find acupuncture decreases the tendency to overeat and participate in binge eating so often associated with the daily stresses of life.

When meeting with an acupuncturist, as part of a weight loss program, a complete health history will need to be obtained.   Based on the nature of the digestive system, coupled with a physical examination of the tongue, the acupuncturist can determine the appropriate areas for needle placement.   Once needs are placed, some acupuncturists may include electrical stimulation to further promote the release of endorphins.   The number of acupuncture treatments needed, to achieve the optimal weight loss effect, is based on the individuals health issues discovered following these examinations.
