I recently went to a Salvation Army store. Since I lost my job things have been tight and they are the store to go to when you're down and out. Well, that's what I thought.

I went to the Salvation Army in search of a computer desk. Nothing fancy. Just something to sit my computer on. The particle board desk I had (since college - 198X) had seen better days and needed to be retired.

After doing some comparison shopping, I realized I couldn't even afford the lease expensive desk sold at Wal-Mart. It was just $65 and came with a book shelf. But, the lint in my pockets let me know I had to go lower than that. I was willing to get something and turn it into a desk and I had $20 to make it happen.

I had gotten so many good deals from the Salvation Army in the past, they were the first store to come to mind. I went to their large store off of Harry Hines in Dallas. Wow, call it my inner Fred Sanford, but there is something special about buying someone else's trash. That's what all of this stuff was. Something someone threw out. Or rather, donated for the good of someone less fortunate.

As I walked through the mélange of clothes, accessories and trinkets; I finally spied a desk from across the room. Heck, it was the EXACT one I had seen in Wal-Mart. This one didn't have a bookshelf, but I thought "Eureka!" I was going to get the little desk I needed and wouldn't have to pay retail.

It was in perfect condition. One little problem. It was priced at $95!!!!!

I took off my glasses. Cleaned them. Put them back on. I turned the price tag upside down; knowing I wasn't seeing this correctly. Then I started laughing hysterically. I knew it had to be a mistake.

I found a person who was working there and asked if the price was correct. "That's what's on there" was her response.

I was floored. An outrageous price and a stank attitude to go with it. It was like a Whiskey and Strawberry milk cocktail. Yuck!

I asked to speak with a manager. Not because of her attitude. I just said a silent prayer for her - minimum wage will make you mad and despondent. I wanted to see the manager because I just knew that price had to be wrong.

Did You Know?
Thift stores are selling at retail prices.

Yep they do the same thing here, they want 200 bucks for a warped kitchen table from the 70's its that plasticy veneer that is avocado green with gold trim. Somebody sit a hot pan down in the middle of the table and melted/warped the hell out of it. The legs are wobbly and the chairs are cracked and busted but yet they insist its a collectors item. I was snickering and a employee heard me and said "They get thousands of dollars for tables like that on Ebay"! I said well you better get that up on "Ebay" because it will never sell here for that price. You'd have to pay most people to haul garbage like that away. They want 5 dollars a pair for used no-name brand jeans there too!

Yeah here in Lancaster Ohio the salvation army thinks everything is an antique. I pointed out to them antiques are at least 100 years old. The manager said that is was 10 years. Somebody probably believes her. I seen this wicker dresser in there for I know 2 months and they wanted 100 dollars for it. It was busted and missing a handle. They insisted it was an antique. I said antiques didn't have those gliders on the bottoms of the legs made with plastic and I am fairly sure Value City Furniture wasn't around in the late 1800's spray painting their logo on the back of the pressed board back of dressers criminetly they take people for fools!

I shop frequently at Thrift store and resale on Ebay (hey, I am one of those people making less than 20k with a family). But I do "give back" and donate my unwanted items that are still good. So anyhow my Ex-ML gives me this gorgeous dinette set. So I donate my old dinette set to the Salvation Army. Mind you I bought this dinette said about 7-8 years ago at Odd Lots (Big Lots) and gave about 100 bucks for it them. Yeah my kids had banged it up carved on it here and there. Well it was still quiet usable so I thought "hey maybe" some other needy family could get some use out of it. So I donate it on Saturday and I go back in the store on Monday to look for other items and I spy my table and chairs. I go over and look at the price and they want 250 dollars for this crappy dinette set! They said it was Antique! Some lady was going ga-ga over it and wondering who made it. I sadly pointed out too her it was in in China for Odd Lots its stamped on the bottom of the chairs.

When you buy things from the Salvation Army, are they suppose to charge taxes on your total amount??? I see it on my reciepts and I'm not sure if they are allowed to do that, I could be wrong. Feel free to correct me if so.

Miller, thanks for stopping by. The computer desk I referenced in this story is still for sale at this same store! I was there two weeks ago and it is now marked down to $45. I thought that was hilarious. But they do have some gorgeous antique furniture with a reasonable ticket on it.

I agree that many thrift store prices have gone up considerably, tho you can still find a bargain if you dig. Goodwill has higher prices on clothing than the local Marietta (GA) thrift store, but the quality and organization is better. Furniture is hit or miss, but yes, they've been watching Antiques Roadshow and think anything with grime on it is valuable. Ha!

I have to agree that the prices have gotten outrageous and just flat out ridiculous. I tried to do a little school shopping at Goodwill and ended up spending $90.00 on four articles of clothing for my kids. I was appalled because I donate frequently to Goodwill I had just donated a computer, a computer desk, a book case, outdoor swing and three boxes of children's clothes that my kids could no longer fit, and a box of shoes. I think I am just going to start donating to churches or other organizations that don't charge anything for donated articles.

I was so upset, I just saw a desk that was the same as mine at a thrift store and it was priced at more than retail! I tried to find items I truly needed but the furniture was way too expensive.

I agree............... I use to spend a lot of time and money in thrift stores, but they have forgot why they were established..................

A friend of mine runs a large charity thrift store that provides a large portion of the income for the entire chapter of the charity. For the store and the offices behind it, the rent is $10,000 a month! Next time you go to a thrift store, ask the manager what expenses the store supports for its cause. You may be surprised.

Amen to that-these "thrift" stores are turning crazy. They've forgotton why they are there.I was in either a Goodwill or Salvation Army in San Diego, a cute bar stool was going for $150.00. The clerk told my sister it was an "antique." Guess he didn't look underneath at all the new technology-antique my foot. It was like something you'd get at Ikea. Some of us single folk shop in these stores because it's "affordable"-NOT!!!!!!! I'd be willing to pay the full "antique " price if it were in fact an antique. These stores sell OLD furniture-they need to realize this. Antiques are 100 years old, or older.
