After months of early morning or late night training, depending on what type of runner you are, the marathon is finally here. A case of the jitters has you questioning what made you decide to take on this task. But one thing is for certain; following these important tips will get you across that finish line feeling happy and healthy.

Sleep Good: Accept the fact that the night before your big 26.2, Mr. Sandman will unfortunately sneak right past you. But all is not lost. Get enough rest two nights before the marathon. Skip the cocktails with friends, or the late night pizza run, and opt for a few extra hours of shut-eye. It will make all the difference on the big day.

Eat Something: Many first-time marathoners are too nervous to eat something before the race, but they don’t realize how detrimental it can be to skimp on nutrients. A big egg, bacon and toast breakfast isn’t necessary, but half a bagel and a banana can keep energy stored in the body for many miles to come.

Nothing New: Stick to what you know. You think you like those socks at the expo you see during packet pick-up. By all means, buy them, but save them for a post-race run. Nothing is more mentally challenging than a blister on your foot early on, or any piece of clothing feeling uncomfortable. Figure out during your training runs what feels best, and stick with that on marathon day. New and flashy might seem fun, but stick with the already worn gear, and you’ll be happy you did.

Set Realistic Goals: Failure. Is failure possible if a first-time marathoner finishes the marathon? It all depends on the goal you set for yourself. Remember, the goal is to finish. Yes, it’s great to challenge yourself and reach for the stars, but an unrealistic goal sets up for feelings of failure. Remember, the marathon is about more than just a time. Rather then setting one specific time to finish in, tell yourself it would be great to finish in this time, but I’ll be happy if I finish in this time. Allow yourself a little leeway, after all, it is your first marathon.
