Day Versus Night

No peace is found in day or night
since you abruptly went away.
The light of day stings my eyes.
I am a wounded animal for all to see
seeking solace in the shadows
to lick the open wounds you left.
I turn from the sun's relentless eye
unable to look at the reflection I see
upon the water's rippled surface
like murky broth that settles slowly
over a drain that will not flow.

Night has lost its sanctity
that once I used to revel in.
The time when I would truly live
now only shudders in the dark.
Sleeping soundly is no more
since slumber took a different turn.
Lonliness is a deep cavity
that no filling can ever cure.
Fear settles like a woolen blanket
in wait for the dawn of a new cycle
where day versus night
but there is no victor
to claim the elusive prize.
