Signs that Your Inside Cat is Suffering from Heat Exhaustion

While many cat owners monitor their outside cats and do all they can to protect them from heat exhaustion, less attention is paid to inside cats that are also exposed to the sun. But how can you tell if your inside cat is suffering from heat exhaustion?

Panting

Panting is a more noticeable symptom of an overheated dog than a cat. But if you notice that your cat is audibly panting, then this is a sign that your cat could be suffering from one of the first signs of heat exhaustion. It is harder to detect
panting in a cat than in a dog unless your cat has been vigorously exercising. But one way to notice this is to watch your cat and see if it keeps its mouth open for a prolonged period of time. Most cats will close their mouths soon after yawning, eating, drinking and preening themselves. But a cat that keeps its mouth open for a longer period of time could be panting. Get up close to your cat if you suspect it is panting and listen to its breathing.

Lethargic Cat

Cats are known as quite laid back animals that love nothing better than to curl up on your favourite chair and fall asleep for the rest of the afternoon. But there is a big difference between a cat that likes to take a regular afternoon nap each day to a cat that is lethargic for a long period of time and unable to move or go about its daily routine. A lethargic cat will be limp to the touch and visibly different to its usual energetic self.

Heart Palpitations

Humans are not the only ones to experience heart palpitations when they are suffering from heat exhaustion, heatstroke and other related conditions. Cats are also susceptible to heart palpitations if they are going through heat exhaustion. If you suspect your cat is suffering from heat exhaustion, gently check your cat's pulse without causing further distress. Is it racing at a rate that is not normal for a cat that has been lying down? Does your cat seem anxious or confused?
