DIY Garden Trellis from Found Objects: Free or Nearly Free Resources at Your Fingertips

Garden trellises are quick and easy to make once you get past the idea that you must make them out of traditional materials. Found objects often make the most creative and functional trellises and they won't cost you a penny.

Old bed springs: If you can get your hands one of the old metal bedsprings, you will have the basis for a striking trellis that will be the talk of all your gardening friends. You may wish to paint the bedspring in a color of your choice. The colors you choose,
of course, will depend on the location and the plants you intend to grow on the trellis. The idea is to provide an interesting background that is functional too.

A full size bedspring will provide space for peas, cucumbers, pole beans, or any climbing flower you wish to display. Creating a focal point in the garden is quick and easy. Simply measure the dimensions of the bedspring and erect stakes for both ends of the trellis. You can use wooden stakes or purchase metal ones at the hardware store. Attach the ends of the trellis to the post with a horseshoe nails.

Springs from cots also work great as a trellis.

Bicycle Tires: Old bicycle tires make great trellises and can be used in a variety of ways. Simply leaning the tire against a building or fence will provide a nice focal point and support for shorter vining plants.

For more robust climbers, try using a large and small bicycle tire mounted on a post. The larger tire should be mounted near the ground and the smaller should be several feet high. String twine from the spokes on the lower wheel to the upper wheel. Plants will climb the twine and create a mound of blossoms.

Driftwood: A large piece of driftwood makes a striking display in any garden. Choose a piece that is at least three feet tall with several branches. This is stunning when covered with blue morning glories.

Deadwood: With a little forest exploration, you are sure to find deadwood that still has branches attached. When placed in the garden and planted with climbing flowers, these add style and visual appeal to any garden.
