Cerebral Palsy is actually an over-arching term that covers a wide range of physical disabilities that are caused by brain damage during the brain’s development. Most instances of Cerebral Palsy occur at a child’s birth, but there are cases of cerebral palsy being diagnosed later in childhood. There are about 2 in every 1000 live birth infants who are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. The condition affects movement and posture and may also include epilepsy, blindness and deafness. 85%-95% of individuals also have speech impairments, but most are not intellectually impaired and have a normal range of intelligence. A diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy can be overwhelming and daunting to parents, not to mention confusing and frightening. While each individual can be affected differently, there are places to turn for general information, connecting with others and resources to help families understand Cerebral Palsy.
