Basic Care
Lilies should have plenty of sunlight and placed in sandy yet rich well-draining soil. At least four to six hours of sunlight is best, but even more will be beneficial. If your soil is not draining well, simply work in some compost, sand, or peat moss. Don't let your bulbs set in water because they will quickly rot. One little known trick you can do is plant lilies along with vinca or fern or another low-growing perennial to give them plenty of shade at the bottom so their roots will stay cool while the blooms get plenty of sun.
Good fertilizer is also a must if you want your lilies to look their best. A fertilizer with phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen will provide excellent results. Slightly acidic soil is required for lilies and gardening centers usually have pH kits available for testing so you can keep your soil at the correct level. Or you can bring a sample of your own soil into a gardening store and they will test it for a small fee.
Planting Bulbs
Another great thing about working with lilies is that they have a self-adjusting mechanism built right in that will bring your bulbs to their optimum depth. They have contractile roots that actually pull the bulbs down into the ground so they can collect water and minerals at the most beneficial level.
