I remember when we were kids and our cereal came in large boxes - or even bags. While having a sleep over at a friend's we were treated to the variety cereals that come in individual-size boxes. We thought those little boxes - in the variety of our choice - were so cool. Of course, at the time I didn't realize that the boxes made great box letters that can be used to decorate for holidays or any time.

Once the boxes are emptied, and the inside wrapper removed, the boxes can become block letters to spell out holiday greetings, congratulations or just an everyday friendly message. Your guests will appreciate the decorative blocks that can wish them a great day or greet them with a simple "Hello".

Stuffing the boxes with grocery bags or tissue will make them a little sturdier. When you set the boxes on a table or shelf, you'll set the boxes upside down. The open lid will become the bottom of the block letter. After decorating the boxes no one will be able to tell what they were originally.

Cover the boxes in fake fur, decorative paper, felt, gift wrap, foil, fabric or even paint. Choose the craft supplies best suited for the type of arrangement you'll be making from the block letters. After covering the box itself add miniature novelties, like holly leaves or tiny ceramic pets, to make the lettering even more attractive. The miniatures can be glued to the top of each box letter, or can be glued to the bottom edges, to appear as if sitting in front of the letter.

You'll find great stickers that allow you to form the letters from the blocks. After decorating the box add a sticker letter or number to the front panel. The letters don't have to be the exact same size as the box but they should be fairly large letters that are easy to read from a short distance. If you don't have stickers, and don't want to invest in them, simply use markers to form the letters.

Make enough boxes to have one of each letter of the alphabet, and maybe even two or three for frequently used letters, then you can change the message any time you'd like. Set the novelties on or around the letters, instead of gluing them on, and it will be easier to create the message you want any time of the year.

Takeaways
  • Mini cereal boxes can be made into fabulous block lettering for holidays or any day.
  • Cover the boxes in fabric, paper, fake fur or even wallpaper.
  • Use large stickers on the front of the boxes to create the letters.
Did You Know?
Instead of stickers you can use paper that has letters or numbers drawn or printed on it.
