David Cook has been the on-again, off-again favorite to win American Idol for that past several weeks, according to TV Guide's Power Rankings, climbing to the top and vying for that position with the far-too-cute David Archuleta. His smooth grunge vocal stylings have won him a huge fan base and even have Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson telling him he could win the competition. So, when they announced the song choices for the Final Six were going to be taken from the catalog of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, one would think that the versatile rocker might have finally hit the wall.

One would have been wrong.

Taking the coaching tips given him by Sir Andrew himself, David Cook sung "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera nearly to perfection. His performance was by far the best of the night. Going back to the low smoothness that he used in wowing the judges with his rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," David Cook exhibited his vocal range and timing with "Music of the Night." He stood center stage, sans guitar, and belted out that song like he had been doing Broadway for years, confidently, with conviction.

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber had to have been proud.

The judges loved it. As well they should. (Randy told Ellen Degeneres on her syndicated talk show earlier in the day that he believed the final American Idol contest would be between the two Davids.)

With this Final Six performance, David Cook has established himself as the one to beat. And as long as he doesn't have one of those self-indulgent moments like he did during the "inspiration week" (he sang a horrible Our Lady Peace song), he may not even have much trouble defeating the terribly talented and even more terribly handsome David Archuleta.

No, OLP, it was pretty awful. But Our Lady Peace isn't one of the great bands, so it doesn't matter. Cook made it through, despite it, so...

I don't think Carly's being Irish had anything to do with it, Connie, or, at least, I certainly hope not. But you never know. Carly's being Irish may have got her booted ultimately....

Very passionate statements, Emma. I don't know if he'll take the music world by storm, but I do believe he's going to make a big impact due to his exposure on Idol.

Innocent by Our Lady Peace isn't horrid!!!! David I believe sounded okay, not good, or great, but okay on that song..... his rendition wasn't that bad! ./.

I enjoyed your review, but I'm not as big a fan of David Cook as you are or seem to be. I think that David Archuleta is the likely winner, but, as we both know, "winning" is not always in the long-term best interests of the "winner." (Can you say "Reuben Stoddard," Taylor Hicks or Daughtry?) I think that David Cook has been consistently good, however,...as has David Archuleta...and I would agree with Randy that the two Davids are the Front-Runners, with Carly Smithson in third place. Carly may well be undone by her tattoos, her husband's tattoos, and being Irish...plus the fact that Simon generally is very hard on her. So, overall, good work on your writing and I enjoyed your take on the evening.

Great Review & Right on the $$$$$$$!!! This performance should squelch the nay-sayers. If it doesn't, then they are just plain DEAF! David Cook can sing just about ANYTHING and he will score a home run. This kid is going to be big.... really BIG! Be prepared - he's going to take the music world by storm! I see "BEST NEW ARTIST" at the Grammy's looming on the horizon! I have had my faith in music restored!. Believe me, I've seen a lot of musicians come and go in my time. By staying true to himself and his style of music, David Cook will attain legend status! Mark my words! ROCK ON, DC!
