Santa's Old Boot Christmas Planter: A Simple Craft Project for the Holidays

Ok, so I love vintage stuff and I always seem to find old leather boots that are crying out to be made into something useful again. This Santa’s Old Boot Christmas Planter is a great way to turn an old leather boot into a fun Christmas accessory that is perfect for decorating your home for the holidays with.

You can use the Santa Boot as a planter or even a vase. The simple addition of a plastic glass inside is all that you will need.

To Make a Santa’s Old Boot Christmas Planter You Will Need:

Old leather Boot (or two)
Primer (Optional)
Acrylic Paint
Artist Paint Brushes
Christmas Ribbon (Optional)
Scissors
Acrylic Spray Paint (Clear)
Painter’s Tape


The first step of this Christmas craft is to thoroughly clean you old leather boot. I like to just use some Mr. Clean or Pine Sol, but vinegar and water also works. If you were using an old leather boot you bought at a yard sale or the Goodwill then I would also spray on some Lysol!

Be sure to remove the shoelaces. You can save these and reinsert them or switch them out with Christmas ribbon if you want to.

Let the boot air dry completely. Water an dpaint do not mix for this project.

Now, depending on your designs, you may want to prime out the entire boot in white primer. You may choose to only add small Christmas details on the boot, but in this example we are painting the entire boot. Acrylic paint should easily adhere to your boot.

Let the primer dry completely before moving on.

You can see from the photo of the Santa’s Old Boot Christmas Planter that the decorating possibilities are needle. I do like to tape off the top few inches of the boot with painter’s tape and paint it red though.

Have some fun and paint the toe area or even the heel red as well.

If you wanted to you could paint the entire boot black and then sew on some fluffy white fabric at the top. This would really look like Santa’s boot.

Embellishments like beads, glue on gemstones, and almost anything will work.

Once all of your embellishments and paint has dried you can spray the entire boot with clear acrylic spray paint. This will protect your artwork form the water and moisture involved with the plant.
