Never married women over 35 recently became a topic of debate between me and a never married man whom I think was over 35. According to a study he did involving never married women, he concluded that if a woman is still single and over 35, something must be wrong with her. This man's excuse for still being single is that he can't meet a compatible woman who, like him, wants to stay childless. He's adamant in his belief that never married women over 35 are messed up.

How many never married women over 35, reading this article, are messed up? Okay, maybe you have a few issues,, but how many married women do you know who don't have issues? What's depressing is that indeed, the older a never married woman gets, the more likely that people really DO think something's wrong with her! Only a person with primitive intelligence could think that just because a woman is never married, something must be abnormal inside her head.

With all the nutcase women out there who get married (alcoholics, drug addicts, mentally ill, obsessive compulsive, anorexics, bulimics, neurotics, anger management problems, hypochondriacs, egomaniacs, control freaks, zero self-esteem, etc.), it's obvious that emotional stability and mental healthfulness do not guarantee a woman will get married.

If any woman is not "normal," it's the woman who marries for absurd reasons or stays in a loveless marriage, even when there are no kids to stay together for the sake of! Look at all the psycho women who find husbands. How DARE anyone suggest that forever-single women must have a mental problem?

I explained to the man who did the study that a massage therapist I know has never tied the knot, is in her 40s and very attractive. This woman's schedule is booked solid, with a steady stream of people visiting her house and paying $65 for massage sessions, lying on a table while she works on them, spilling details about their personal lives as she puts them at ease. Her house is immaculate and she's very health conscious. She makes $125,000 a year; a huge, loyal client base.

Takeaways
  • If never married women must have something wrong with them, does that mean women
  • like Elizabeth Taylor and Britney Spears have it all together?
  • "There's someone for EVERYone" has not been scientifically proven.

Hmmm ... I was single until 31; my sister until 39. The real interesting thing is the idea that something is "wrong" with unmarried women - but not unmarried men???!

I agree with Genie. There is absolutely nothing wrong with women of any age who do not get married. Actually, I've known women who remained single for a number of reasons. The point is that it is their decision to make and I would never judge a woman who made that decision. Although I am married, I have had to face a different sort of societal prejudice than your experience and that has been my conscious decision to not have children. Society still believes women should marry and then have children. Sophie

I think the real question is "What's wrong with people who conclude that a never married woman over 35 has problems?"
