What You Should Know About Arteriosclerosis
Arteriosclerosis is actually a term for a number of conditions where arteries thicken and lose their elasticity. This occurs when fatty material such as cholesterol deposits along artery walls and forms plaque. As the artery narrows and becomes obstructed due to plaque normal blood flow
is impaired. When oxygen carrying blood is unable to reach areas of the body where it is needed life threatening conditions such as stroke or heart attack may occur. Arteriosclerosis can affect blood vessels in any area of the body and blood clots may develop.
There are several factors that may indicate an increased risk of developing arteriosclerosis. Those risk factors include:
Age
Family history
Hypertension
Obesity
Smoking
As people age their arteries tend to narrow and lose their elasticity. If a family member especially a parent or grandparent suffered from arteriosclerosis you may be at an increased risk of developing the condition. Smoking causes blood vessels to constrict which increases your risk of developing arteriosclerosis if you smoke.
What is the treatment for arteriosclerosis?
Your physician may prescribe medication and/or recommend lifestyle changes. Taking an aspirin a day may be suggested to reduce the risk of blood clots. In some cases, surgery may be needed. Angioplasty is the recommended procedure in which a small metal stent is inserted inside the artery to keep it open and allow the uninhibited flow of blood.
Of course, prevention is always best. There are several steps you can take toward the prevention of arteriosclerosis. If you don't smoke, don't start. If you do smoke, quit or at the very least, cut back. If you are overweight consult with your physician to create and appropriate weight loss plan. Take stock of your eating habits. Have you been eating healthy? Be honest with yourself. If your answer is no, re-evaluate your dietary needs and start planning nutritious meals. Replace junk food with healthy snacks.
