As we care for our aging parents, there are many health issues that will arise. One of the most often overlooked health issues involved that of dental health. As tooth loss naturally occurs with aging, it will be important to encourage regular dental hygiene and dental visits to ensure that oral hygiene is maintained. Without proper oral hygiene, your aging parent may suffer a variety of residual health complications. One aspect of oral hygiene that is of utmost importance, especially when the loss of natural teeth occurs, involves the use of dentures. While dentures can be expensive, they are necessary to ensure your parent has continued ability to chew, speak and that gums are protected. Finding the right pair of dentures, however, can be quite challenging. In fact, it may be your parent's gender that will determine how challenging your quest to find and fit dentures will be.
Because women more commonly lose their teeth with aging, they are more likely to require intensive dental care and the use of dentures. This is not to say, however, that an aging father will not require dentures also. When considering dentures, and associated denture services, it will be important to know how your parent's gender may play a role in their satisfaction of dental care. Women, by far, tend to be better served with more advanced denture products than men and often express dissatisfaction and pain, associated with dentures, more readily.
While you may be inclined to believe that your parent's complaints of denture pain and discomfort are exaggerated, for many senior adults this is simply not the case. In fact, for elderly women, the complications with dentures are often significant and related to hormonal changes and changes in blood pressure. In addition, there is a degree of psychological component that is often associated with denture use.
