Buying a car IS a hassle. If you are on a budget it's even more work. Say you want to buy your first car, or your second car. What can you do? Go to a dealer, check out cars, go to more dealers, travel to a neighboring town? Sure, these are all great ideas, but it's important to have the knowledge before you go out.I've compiled a list of things you can do to minimize the pain of car buying. I have family that is in the car selling business, and they were kind enough to fill me in on the process.
The very first thing you should do is decide if you want a new car or an old car. I suggest checking out this.
Secondly, do research! This is imperative. The first thing you should find out is the price range for the car you're looking for, the fair price range.
Use the Kelley Blue Book. to find the fair market prices. Once you have an idea, you can shop around.
Also, remember that if you're going to trade in your old car, you should look at the fair sale price of your car. If you sell it privately, you can go higher, depending on the condition and demand for your car, but if you sell it to a dealer, expect to get KBB value, maybe even less.
Thirdly, check out websites for the car you want to buy. I have spent COUNTLESS hours on autotrader.com.Craisglist.com is good too,
Fourth. Although I have never gone to a police auction, I've talked with many friends who have gone. It's all about being lucky there. You have to go when they are selling the good repossessed cars with low mileage. There is usually a non-refundable fee to enter these auctions.
Fifth. Friends and family. I acquired my 97 Jeep Wrangler through my dad's boss. The car was IMMACULATE when I bought it. Usually people don't want to go through the hassle of listing their car on a website or a magazine for selling cars, such as Auto Trader. Talk to your friends, they may be selling a car. It's who you know!
Sixth Ebay. Check ebay for car deals. You could find some REALLY good ones. The only drawback is that you don't actually get to see the car, unless you live in the same city as the seller, and you would have to pay a high shipping rate.
