The most important tip for celebrating a green Mother's Day for an eco-friendly mom is not to regale her with a collection of consumer goods. Oh, sure, you could painstakingly research to find consumer products made by green manufacturers, and you could even buy mom products that help her to live a greener lifestyle. But to celebrate a truly green Mother's Day for an eco-friendly mom, you might be a tad more creative and think beyond conspicuous consumption. What might an eco-friendly mom appreciate as a green gift?

Farm Co-Op Membership

Membership in a farm co-op will bring farm fresh produce to eco-friendly mom's dinner table every week throughout the summer growing season. The cost of the membership is typically no more than the family would spend on fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. However a farm co-op membership for Mother's Day allows mom to choose pesticide-free, locally grown, organic produce each week throughout the summer growing season.

Composting Bin

With a few 2 by 4s and some wire fencing, you can create a simple composting bin for a Mother's Day present. Mom's new eco-friendly composting bin will allow her to minimize use of the electric garbage disposal and it will provide her with free compost for her garden made from the family's recycled food scraps and lawn trimmings. Check this site for a variety of options for adults to build a composting bin, or this one for child-friendly instructions if the bin is to be a green Mother's Day gift from the kids.

Rain Barrel

In spring, environmental organizations often hold free rain barrel making workshops. These organizations scavenge for food grade storage barrels and provide hardware to create rain barrels, then teach participants how to put them together. By making a free rain barrel for your eco-friendly mom for Mother's Day, you make use of a recycled container to create a green gift that will help mom to conserve water. A rain barrel will provide an eco-friendly mom with water for gardening, landscaping and car washing needs. It will also help to conserve water from underground aquifers reduce pollution causing runoff to local streams.

Great work as usual - we all need to wish a green Mother's day to the most important mother of them all - Mother Earth!

great ideas, Carol! My mom is definitely seeing green in a few weeks (though maybe not the 'green' she'd like ;oP). :o)
