Horror movies like A Nightmare On Elm Street, Saw, Halloween and the Friday The 13th series, get many sequels, merchandising and most of the attention when it comes to fright flicks. Some scary movies delight as roller coaster rides of thrills, chills and fun, but simply don't draw big profit on initial release, or are so low budget they fall through the cracks. Horror fans need to discover these lost gore gems.

Frightmare (1974)

This British shocker delivers a complex story full of startling twists and turns, highlighted by some truly gruesome moments.

Directed and written by Pete Walker, the movie plays somewhat like Hitchcock's Psycho - a family torn apart by madness and murder - complete with a less than stable or sane mother figure. There's even elements of cannibalism to really freak one out. Dorothy Yates and husband were put away for slaughtering people and the film picks up shortly after the two are released. A nightmare sequence on a train is one of the more memorable scenes and it will undoubtedly convince you that the flick lives up to its name.

Shock Waves (1977)

Do you like Nazi zombie movies? If so, Shock Waves is a must for your collection.

Written and directed by Ken Wiederhorn, this effectively creepy movie serves up chills when a boatload of tourists becomes stranded on a spooky island. Classic genre favorites John Carradine and Peter Cushing show up in small roles and though there's never truly any stomach churning gore, when the zombie soldiers hunt and kill their victims, it's pretty nightmarish.

Basket Case (1982)

Perhaps the most well known on the list, but Basket Case still isn't all that main stream. It's rarely on TV - certainly broadcast - and when talking to horror lovers, many never saw it.

I hate to admit that I've actually seen most of these. Not sure what that says about me. I used to love horror movies but these days they are just too violent.
