We hear about big problems with the earth quite frequently. On the news and on the internet we are bombarded with stories and statistics for how trends like global warming and water pollution can lead to catastrophic results. Unfortunately, the way these stories are presented leads many of us to believe that we ourselves can do nothing to save the earth. Some options that are being put forward such as buying a hybrid car to improve gas mileage or use alternative fuels, but to the average person these seem too far out of reach. I understand that most people are busy, and that scraping out a living often takes precedence over trying to help the environment. That is why I have devised a list of means to do your part to help the earth, none of which require much effort at all. However, as has been said countless times before, if a lot of people do these little things, then big problems might be avoided.

1. When you're washing your hands, don't put the water on full blast. This is unnecessary and half the time results in you getting water all over yourself. Take the extra second to carefully put the water on at about a quarter of full power. If you're brushing your teeth, you shouldn't have the water going while you're brushing. What purpose is it serving? Similarly with doing the dishes in the sink, only use the water when you need it. Soap the dish up, then rinse it. There's no need to have the water going the entire time. When you take a shower, cut it short by thirty seconds. If you have a shower head that puts out two-and-a-half gallons of water per-minute, then with those thirty seconds you will have saved over a gallon of water. Following these easy practices of common sense are easy ways to save water. Although it might seem like it, the earth doesn't have an unlimited supply of fresh water. Save what you can, where you can.

2. If you're not going to be in a room in your house five minutes from now, turn the light off in it. What is the point of leaving a light on when no one is there to need it? Get out of the chair and walk a few steps to the switch. If anything, this will be giving you more exercise, which everyone could use.
