Those damn “special interests”

It’s election time, again, and the voice of the candidate is heard in the land.

Every candidate whose commercials I have heard, whether for election or re-election, decries “special interests”. Their opponent is in thrall to special interests, the other guy (or gal) is in the pocket of these special interests and, the voter is assured that this office seeker will never allow those nasty folks interfere with his or her dedication to the public good.

Who are these “special interests”? How do they keep corrupting office holders if those seeking public office are determined to ignore them?

They are us!

A special interest group is an organized group that does not put up individuals for election, but seeks to influence government policy or legislation. They are often termed Political Pressure groups or groups with a “vested interest”. In reality, these groups, organizations or individuals are merely exercising their rights under the First Amendment of the Constitution. The right to petition the government for a redress of grievances or to present a political point of view is guaranteed.

In this country, the term has a pejorative connotation as if a group advocating a particular point of view is, by its nature, in conflict with the interests of the public at large. Recently, for instance, Arnold Schwarzenegger often used these terms in his successful 2003 campaign for Governor of California. He waved a broom promising to "sweep clean" the government of special interests, implying that these "interests" were dirty.

In our local political arena, “bad” special interest groups are those representing developers, insurance companies, utilities and such. But these groups do not always have interests in opposition to that of the public at large. Developers are engaged in the construction of homes and offices, without which the economy would wither and die. Insurance companies provide protection against loss caused by one’s own carelessness of by acts of God.

Takeaways
  • Special interest may support our values ands are not, per se, bad
  • Politicians use the term as a "straw man"; it has no intrinsic worth for good or bad

I tried responding to Mr. David Wordsworth's comments on a blog, only to find that my comments were conveniently "blocked" so here's my response to him: Mr. David Wadsworth, Military checkpoints in DC: http://yedies.blogspot.com/2008/06/police-state-in-dc-is-this-what-its.html Or Read The End of America. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW9PulYpjGs&feature=related Naomi Wolf gives a fascinating read about how fascism rises in small steps. Bush didn't get money from the oil companies...YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, RIGHT? Vice President Dick Cheney's company is Halliburton. What about their 2.5 BILLION NO-BID RESTORE IRAQI CONTRACT? If that isn't cronyism, then I don't know what is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Q-89tAV34 I don't know how you are but you need to get your thumb out of your ass and wake up! I can't speak for Hilary Clinton but it's Obama's policy not to take money from the special interests, particularly the oil companies. Fyi: it's

The ability to freely express your needs and interests in a fair and thoughtful dialogue is one of the greastest freedoms we have in the US, however when big money buys influence and laws are made for the few because of the greed of elected officials, rarely does it help those without power or money. When the Abramoff , Cheney's and Rove's help themselves rarely do my specail interest get noticed

I think the "bad" special interests are primarily the mega corporation whose only goal is to garner more revenue. It is bad when the ordinary folk are stepped on or otherwise lose ground as a result of the corporation wielding superior financial clout in lobbying and the politician's towing the line.......save for that negative outcome, the ability to lobby is what makes us a free country.

Special Interest groups serve a special need in our country. They are what make us special. We all try to have a say in what is going on. They are democracy at work.
