Common Causes of Itchy Eyes
Almost everyone has suffered from itchy eyes at one point or another. The problem is a very uncomfortable one, especially when you have no idea what is causing it. Even though itchy eyes are a fairly common problem, most people do not know what the most common causes are. Here are just
some of the most common causes of itchy eyes.
Allergies
One of the most common causes of itchy eyes is allergies. This problem is incredibly common. Generally, it causes the eyes to suffer from itchiness, puffiness and redness. You will also probably notice problems with your nose, throat or head when you experience itchy eyes due to allergies. If you experience itchy eyes during a time of year when you normally have allergies (such as spring) or you are around something that you know trigger your allergies (such as cat fur), then there's a good chance that this problem is behind the itchiness you are experiencing.
Common Cold
The common cold or a sinus infection can also cause the eyes to become incredibly itchy. Since the symptoms are very similar to allergies, it is important to make sure that you do not confuse the two with one another. A cold or sinus infection is contagious, while a case of the allergies is not. When in doubt, wait it out for a few days to see if the problem goes away before making a visit to the doctor for antibiotics.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Conjunctivitis, otherwise referred to as Pink Eye, is another one of the many causes of itchy eyes. While allergies and the common cold can become confused with one another, there is a good chance that you will know if you have Pink Eye. Some of the symptoms of Pink Eye include itchiness, redness, discharge and wetness in the eyes. Conjunctivitis is incredibly contagious, particularly among children. If you think that you have Pink Eye, it's important to see a doctor.
