Last week my 5th grader had earth as a subject on his science book. I remembered this older book and we finally found it from our not so organized book pile.

This book teaches about the soil and rocks and fossils and all the cool things we are stepping on every day.

I love the way it is written. This is cartoon like with character's thinking out loud and talking to each other. Then there is these note book pages on the side giving plenty information about the subject in hand.

You will follow the students and Ms. Frizzle while they will travel into the earth and discover new things. And while reading it all you will learn new words like STALAGMITE and STALACTITE and get to laugh at the kids exploring different things.

There is humor involved all over the book like this page:

"What is your favorite rock?
Rock 'N' Roll!"

In the end everyone has a great rock to contribute to the class rock collection and you learned more than you realized about different rocks and how they form.

Our book is from Scholastic line-up and about 9 inches wide and 7 1/2 tall and paperback version. There is 40 pages but these pages are cramped with new words and information so you do not want to try to learn it all at once, way too much!

I think this was a great helper for my son to understand his science subject at school and fun to read. My 3rd grader boy also was very interested about this book and still keeps it by his bed side.

It is too hard for my 1st grader to understand as of yet so I do not recommend it to the children under 8 unless they are totally fascinated by rocks!

Illustrations are colorful and facial expressions well done so it is easy for your child to relate to these kids who are not so sure about this experiment to start up with.

In the end of the book there is a page which explains how to say new earth science words and there is 11 words included with pronunciation. There is plenty more new words in the book.

I love the way Joanna Cole makes learning fun in her Magic School Bus Series and would highly recommend this book to everyone with children in school!
