Moldova is one of those places you probably go through life without hearing much about. Where is it exactly? Who lives there? What is the culture like? Most of us don't know. Moldova isn't a tiny, minuscule place, yet, its ability to stay out of the limelight makes it difficult to describe. Those considering a vacation to Europe may think Moldova isn't worth it, but this is an unfair statement. From charming city life to quaint and beautiful architecture to religious symbolism, Moldova has much to offer an "off-the-beaten-path" Europe traveler who wants something different.

Before the best places in Moldova are brought to light, a little history: At the beginning of its recorded history, people called Dacians lived in what is now Moldova. Huns were among the many groups of people who tried to conquer this important territory. Romania and Russia also played a part in Moldova's birth. The name Moldavia is also used to describe the area. People from Russia and other nearby countries made up much of Moldova's population in the 1800s.

Where to Begin

Chisinau, one of Moldova's most popular cities, is full of great vacation experiences. Don't forget to seek out All Saints Church, with its beautiful blue-and-white color scheme and distinctly Russian-looking domes. Chisinau's city hall has an almost American or English flavor. The city has had its share of hard times; nearly obliterated in the 1940s, it suffered an earthquake in the same year. The Triumphal Arch is another tourist attraction in Chisinau that should help keep photographers busy. The city is also known as Kishinev. Kishinev/Chisinau hosts some very modern architectural art but history lovers will appreciate the beautiful churches scattered throughout the city. Don't forget to check out museums in Kishinev and see beautiful examples of Moldova's folk costumes. It's worth the time.

Takeaways
  • Moldova's folk costumes are charming and can be seen at ethnic museums
  • Chisinau/Kishinev has a harrowing but fascinating history
  • Cricova, the "underground city," is definitely worth a visit
