I have to say that I am really surprised with Associated Content asking us to write about Mother's Day in the U.K. I am English and a mother as well as a grandmother. My daughter, her husband, and my 2 grandchildren are all in England.

My daughter sends me an English Calendar every year for Christmas. This way I can keep in touch with what is going on in the U.K.

Mother's Day came really early this year. Normally it is towards the end of March, around my daughter's birthday, but this year it was 2nd March. My daughter purchased an English Mother's Day card and mailed it in plenty of time for me to receive it by the beginning of March. I always put it on my desk above my computer and keep it there until May comes around.

When my American friends say to me "Happy Mother's Day", I smile to myself and think of the card I still have standing on my desk. Yes, I am lucky enough to have 2 Mother's days because of being British but living in America.

When I lived in England March was always a cold month so I would celebrate Mother's Day at home. Normally my daughter or husband would cook me breakfast. Then I would open my card and presents from my daughter.

Eating out in England is very expensive and if you don't live in a big city then it is quite possible that you would not get reservations for dinner. We would have a family get together and when my mother was alive we would all come around the table and enjoy the celebration together.

Now my mother has passed away my daughter continues the U.K. mother's day in England. Her daughters buy her gifts and she is spoiled for the day. Mother's day in England is very similar to America. Mothers are treated with respect and made to feel special. The only difference is that our celebration is forgotten by the time the American one is celebrated.

So sweet! It must be bittersweet for you to be home, but away from home.
