Thus, adoption is looked at. And even though her mother rudely begs her not to adopt an African child like so many movie stars, it is discovered that single adults are rarely approved for adoption. Thus she turns toward more unorthodox means. Surrogate parenting. She goes to a company that establishes relationships with women who are willing to carry someone's child in their womb. The older-than-middle-aged CEO of this company did conceive a child herself, naturally. This is supposed to be a funny scene as the main-lead is astounded and slightly creeped-out from the fact that this older woman can give birth. I just thought it was awkward to watch.
This leads the protagonist to the less than elegant surrogate parent who desperately needs the cash that the protagonist is willing to offer. Both the main-lead and the surrogate agree that they want to bare a baby with each other and there is a slow-motion montage of the impregnating process. This was supposed to be a funny scene as well, and it almost was, but it did not deliver in the end.
The woman carrying the child eventually breaks up with her dead-beat boyfriend and moves in with Tina Fey's character. From there, a series of Odd Couple moments commence that are supposed to be light-hardly amusing. This is Hollywood's attempt at wit. Like most times, they fail.
And of course, there is a love story with a certain actor that is most notable for his homosexual roll in As Good As it Gets. The man preaches on about evil corporations, like the company the main-lead works for, and rants against surrogate parenting as a rich person's way to buy a legacy. And yet the guy lives in a lavishing, uber-modern apartment that can't run any less than nine-hundred a month. The hippie that can afford a futuristic home.
