As of May 5, 2008 United Airlines will begin charging an extra $25.00 for customers who want to travel with a second bag. For a family of four or more, this fee can add up quickly. There are a few exceptions to this rule such as customers with first care fares, and gold and silver card members. Other Airlines have latched on to this policy. Delta's new policy will begin on May 1. Northwest, United, and US Airways will charge extra beginning on May 5, 2008. Customers will still be able to use a free carry on bag, but checking a second bag will cost more. To check a third bag will cost $100.00 more. For me, this means I will not be checking a second bag on any flight. Instead, I will travel more lightly. Fortunately, I have a bit of experience in package lightly as I usually only travel with a carry on bag. Here are my tips for traveling lightly to avoid the second-bag fee.
Purchase clothes when you get to your destination: Plan to depart for your trip with no more than a carry on bag, with a collapsible bag inside so you can make purchases and return with your carry-on and one bag to check. Everyone shops when they travel, so why even bother bringing your own wardrobe with you. All you need are a minimum amount of toiletries as allowed by law, and a couple of changes of clothes. All of this can easily fit in a weekend bag.
Put together a travel wardrobe. When traveling, you should being versatile, low maintenance clothing with interchangeable pieces for mixing and matching. Bring wrinkle free items, where all of the pieces match each other so you can make numerous outfits out of a few pieces. Spiegel for example, carries several clothing collections that are incredibly versatile, classy, and comfortable. For men, two suits, with a several shirts can last an entire week if need be.
