A Review of Ministry and Meshuggah by a Death Metal Novice

The air is chilly as my boyfriend and I walk down South Street in Philadelphia towards the TLA. He is as giddy as a schoolgirl talking about the concert. It is Ministry's Final World Tour. I am told that this group is a pioneer of death metal. The rambling continues on about the other band we will be seeing, Meshuggah. I look at him and smile at his delight, for I am in no means a death metal fan. I have been to a couple of concerts, but never really paid attention to the show.

One thing about going to a show at the TLA; get there early. The venue is street parking. South Street is already a large draw. When you add a concert to the mix, it is going to take you some a while to find a place to park. Due to this, we missed the opening act, Hemlock. I was very glad I wore comfortable shoes. It was a walk of a few blocks to get to the TLA for the Ministry show.

I noticed upon entering the venue that there was a very diverse crowd present at Ministry's Final World Tour. The ages varied from the young under 21 crowd to the young at heart, who had been following Ministry from the beginning.

Meshuggah went on for their performance shortly after we arrived. The set was considerably shorter then I would have expected from a main act. Meshuggah was on the stage for 45 minutes. First thing that I noticed was their lighting for the performance. The blinding flashing of the stage lights was constant through out the entire set. The music was enjoyable for the most part. I did find that the base drowned almost everything out. The vocals and other instruments were hard to hear at times. Being a novice to listening to Meshuggah's music, I was not sure if it was supposed to be like that. Everyone else seemed to be enjoying it, so I took it for what is was.
