Acid reflux is very common, and ironically it occurs because of an abnormality. When the valve separating the contents of the stomach from the esophagus does not function properly acid rises up and out. If symptoms occur more than once or twice a week it is considered Gastroesophageal reflux disease which is far less common than acid reflux.

Common symptoms of acid reflux include:

- Heartburn
Heart burn is the most common symptom of acid reflux. It is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus, just below or behind the breastbone.

-regurgitation of partially digested or sour tasting stomach contents.

-difficulty or pain with swallowing

-Nausea

-a feeling of a lump in your throat, difficultly swallowing, sore throat or a need to repeatedly clear your throat.

-persistent cough and/or asthma symptoms.

-excessive saliva production.

Prolonged untreated acid reflux can cause long term effects such as ulcers, strictures, and fluid in the middle ear and sinuses.

Acid reflux can effect more than just adult too. It's also a common problem in infants. Symptoms in infants and children are not quite the same however, and include:

* Frequent spitting up or vomiting
* Irritability when feeding
* Refusing food or eating only small amounts
* Sudden or constant crying
* Arching the back while feeding
* "Wet" burps
* Frequent hiccups
* Frequent coughing
* Poor sleep habits with frequent waking
* Bad breath

A change in life style can often help with anyone's acid reflux. For instance, certain foods tend to more aggravate symptoms. Fatty or spicy foods should be avoided. Alcohol and caffeinated drinks are also a bad idea. Acid reflux occurs more frequently at night, elevating the upper body while sleeping can help gravity help acid to stay in the stomach where it belongs. Smoking is also not advised.
