Cyber Bullying: Tips for Parents on Protecting Their Children
With the development of the internet, there are many more ways for a stranger to gain access to children. Parents obviously want their children safe. The internet is a great tool that can actually help a child become more social, gain more knowledge and hone their skills. However, it's
also a place where secrets can be hidden. Cyber bulling is an increasing problem involving more kids and teens every day. Here are some tips for parents on how to protect their child from a cyber bully.
One of the most important things that a parent can do is to allow communication to flow. If a child doesn't feel like they can tell their parents anything and that they can't be open about certain things, they are less likely to go to their parents about more serious issues going on in their life, such as if they are having problems with a cyber bully. Allow your child to go to you if they have a problem, but show them that you won't overreact to it no matter what the problem is. Give them the feeling that they can go to you with anything.
Don't panic and don't overreact about your child using the internet. As frightening as the internet may seem, it's more good then bad. You can't be so overprotective that they feel smothered and attacked. Eventually they're going to use the internet. It's better for them to know what's right and wrong about the internet when they're growing up then being clueless and ending up in a bad situation when they're older and out of the house. The more you tell them not to do it, the more they'll wonder what all the fuss is about.
Don't act high and mighty and don't give them the impression that you never did anything out of line when you were younger. Believe it or not kids want to relate to their parents. They want to know that their parents didn't have zero problems growing up. They want to have a connection to someone who, at one time, faced the same problems that they did. The best advice comes from those who have experienced the certain issue themselves. While you may not have had a personal experience with cyber bullying or the internet, chances are you've had some type of problem with a bully at some point in your life.
