Pilates vs. the Swiss Ball

Which is More You?

If you were familiar with Pilates, you would know that it could be done with an exercise ball as well as other equipment. However, most of it is done with no equipment at all. On the other hand, Exercise balls are in a reasonable price range, and are the only equipment required for that
type of workout. Both of these strength training methods can be very effective, but which one is right for your personality?

Pilates

Pilates is not a ‘new’ type of fitness. It is a series of focused activities, similar to yoga, which promote a ‘core’ balance in your body. Beginner’s Pilates involves breathing techniques and practice with posture. You wouldn’t have guessed it, but breathing is surprisingly linked to your posture. If you are hunched over, your lungs can’t fully expand. With Pilates you learn how to breathe with the full capacity of your lungs. This takes practice and patience, of course, but it will improve your aerobic workouts as well.

Pilates is not only a strength training workout that can be done without weights to improve lean mass, but it is a philosophy. Are you the type prone to meditation? Or are you just more inclined to relaxation techniques? If so, Pilates could be for you. It’s a very slow method of movements, which focus on breathing and perfect spinal alignment while strengthening core muscles that help improve health. It is best for those that don’t want a heavy weight training workout, but want to improve their physical health and posture.

But for someone who doesn’t want to spend twenty minutes just breathing as a step in the process that encompasses the Pilates method, than a Swiss ball might be right for you.

Swiss Ball

Just like Pilates, the Swiss ball, or exercise ball, is not a ‘new’ development, but has gained popularity in recent years. Many people veer away from this type of strength training because it doesn’t appear as though it will be effective. I mean, how is rolling around with a ball going to do anything for you?
