10. Owning your own domain/url increases your own personal sovereignty and opens up all sorts of possibilities that you didn't have when you didn't have a clean, marketable domain/url.

9. You're supporting a valuable, productive industry of entrepreneurs around the world.

8. Flexibility is crucial. You must be the one in charge of all contingency plans for your web business. If you're relying solely upon someone else's domain/url and they go belly up, you're screwed. At worst, with your own domain/url, you can change your forward.

7. There are just too many advertising revenue possibilities on and off line, to not own your own domain/url. And way too many business people need you.

6. You'll be much more certain of your affiliate link integrity. Are you affiliate marketers aware that there are people on the web, that when ordering products from your company, will strip your affiliate tracking data out of the url? Danged if I know why they do it. They're just evil I guess. Via your own domain/url you're certain to get the tracking cookie.

5. You can forward it, masked or not, to any domain/url your heart desires.

4. It's much easier to bring up in conversation, passively, with strangers.

3. It adds credibility when you do discuss your web business.

2. It's much easier to promote in print, and nowhere nearly as intimidating as http://www.yoursite.com/alphabetsoupingreek/?htregdlhuyteyougetthepicture? to web newbies. So you'll get more of the people who haven't 'heard it all before' yet.

1. .info sites are down to $1.99 per year (+ ICANN fees) from my good friends at the resources link.

Takeaways
  • It's easier to casually promote your web business with your own domain/url
  • Owning your own domain/url adds credibility.

I own several, but have not yet estyablished web sites...still trying to determine what I want to achieve when I do set them up. The company I purchase from is relatively cheap, and they throw in WHOIS privacy for free during the first year of ownership. I pay a little less than $10 for dot coms, while many companies charge between $15-40+...pays to shop around.
