Mother's Day is just around the corner. Children all across America have been participating in creating and making a gift or card for their mothers. Children at babysitters, preschools, private schools, and public schools color, cut, glue, and paint Mother's Day gifts.

While most teachers feel that they are doing something special for the child and for the family, there can be a negative outcome of the project. Most mothers are very appreciative and most children are very excited about the creation of a gift.

However some children are placed in a very awkward situation when it comes to making a Mother's Day gift. In the past the gift would have been a clear cut issue. The child takes the gift home and gives it to his or her mother. No problem, right?

Unfortunately things have now changed. Things are not so simple for children. The basic typical family is now gone.

While creating these wonderful gifts, the minds of some children are spinning. They are trying to decide who the gift should go to. In some cases there are only a couple of options. However in some situations, children could have three or four choices for the gift.

Some grandparents now have custody of their grandchildren. Mom visit when it is convenient for her or when she is not in rehab or jail. Daddy has a new girlfriend or wife and wants the children to call her mother.

So now the child has to make a decision. Grandma is now acting as the mother. The real mom may not even be around on Mother's Day, and daddy wants this other lady that the child barely knows to get the gift. What does a child do?

It is very sad that the day meant to honor and cherish the birth of a child and the becoming of a mother has turned to situations such as the one discussed above. However, this is the world that we now live in. The same situation can be seen with Father's Day. The only thing that makes that day a little easier is that most schools are not in session to create a hype over the day.

While it would be very unfair to the deserving and appreciative mothers not to make those cute little gifts, it does make one stop and think when little Johnny asks who he should give his Mother's Day gift to this year.
