A couple of weeks before Wal-Mart released the news to the public that they would be closing their layaway departments, I received emails telling me this was going happen.  At first at I didn’t believe it.  I thought, “Surely Walmart isn’t stupid enough to close their layaway department.”  When I discovered that most Walmart’s would be shutting down the layaway department before Christmas I was even more skeptical.  This lead me to do some research about Walmart and what I found literally made me sick.

Now, I don’t use the layaway department more than once a year to purchase expensive electronics, but I know several people who use Walmart’s layaway department at the holidays.  So I set out on my journey to discover if the news I had received was true.  Now you have to realize that Walmart had not yet told the public that they were closing the layaway department, so it wasn’t on any of the news sites.  What I did find was a forum for retail store associates.  This website, called Retail Worker contains forums for several different retail stores, including Walmart.  Sure enough, I found the topic No More Layaway, where Walmart retail workers were discussing why and when the layaway department would be closing.  Several of the associates simply stated that they had been informed that the layaway department, at their Walmart, would indeed be closing.  But other posts, revealed what Walmart, more than likely, doesn’t want people to know.  There were several posts like this one:

“I over heard one of the mgr's at my store telling someone that Walmart doesn’t want to reach out to trailer trash anymore, that they are trying to be more like Target and bring in a higher class of people. That’s one reason why they are getting rid of layaway. Who knows?”

Perhaps WalMart ended the layaway department not as a way to get rid of low income customers but to remove a business service that is one of the most costly and inefficient for any company to run. Costs associated with the running and management of a layaway department are sky high. Many layaway items do not get picked up and paid for, instead the layaway is canceled and the inventory is returned to the shelves if it is still in season. If not, then it has to go directly to the clearance rack. The layaway money is returned to the customer and the store is left with inventory it could have moved. Now it is taking up shelf space and may or may not be sold. Every item that sits on a shelf costs the company money. This holds true for any company, not just WalMart. Employees in a department that is closing are not going to have a high opinion of their employer. Facts get distorted. Layaway is one of the most inefficient business models for a store to have. Why do you think that the only one

Amy, it's sad Walmart can have so much control over communities and people's lives. Our community recently rallied to keep Walmart OUT and we won. My brother works in purchasing for a retail store and has told me about some of Walmart's shady practices with loss leaders, etc. Thanks for this informative article.

I hate Walmart! They consistently go into small towns and force out every mom and pop store within a 20 mile radius. They treat their employees like s*!t and all the while get tax breaks to do it! I wouldn't put anything past them.

I hate it when my loooong comments are cut off!! Here's the rest: I also agree with you about the higher end clothing. At my favorite women's clothing store, I know I'm paying more for the customer service. The salespeople there give you your own changing room that you may come and go in as long as you're in the store, where they will take the items you pick and put them in the room for you as you shop, where they will hand deliver alternative sizes and colors as you need them, and where they carry your chosen purchases to the register when you've made your final decisions. Then they wrap your purchases up in tissue paper and put them in a sturdy shopping bag with a handle. THAT is what you pay for, so NO I'm not paying higher prices at Walmart.

I have used Walmart layaway for christmas toys and summer clothes. The kids don't need to impress anyone with the brand names of their t-shirts and shorts. You shouldn't buy electronics at Walmart because the manufacturers make a special line just for Walmart, so when something goes wrong with it and you call the manufacturer, they will send you back to Walmart. I learned that the hard way. That manufacturer (not naming names) told me that Walmart doesn't want to pay for their quality product, just their name, so they make special ones just for them that don't have the higher quality components usually associated with their name brand - which is why they refuse to replace equipment themselves, and send the customers back to Walmart. I also agree with you about the higher end clothing. At my favorite women's clothing store, I know I'm paying more for the customer service.
