Dear Reader,

Greetings from a gloomy, grey Bangkok. A cyclone moved close to Thailand yesterday and several provinces have been put on alert. An American friend, who just arrived in Thailand yesterday, e-mailed me to say in Chiang Mai, where she is, they are on high alert and severe flooding is expected. When Chiang Mai floods, it really floods! The last time I was there, my parents and I left a restaurant in the Night Market and had to paddle to our songtaew (little red open-sided truck used for public transportation in Chiang Mai). The water was up to our knees! A great adventure for my parents, who couldn't take enough photographs of everybody paddling.

In other news, our crazy Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has announced that a rice cartel (operating similarly to OPEC, the oil cartel) would be beneficial for rice producing countries. Thailand is the world's largest rice producer and number 1 rice exporter, so Samak thinks this would be beneficial to Thailand. While the West scratches their heads wondering why anybody with a brain would come up with this idea (any country can grow rice if the conditions are right, so if there was a cartel controlling prices, other countries would just grow their own), Samak is talking up his idea. Even Vietnam, who he has approached to join the cartel, are saying "Er, thanks, but no thanks".

The Health Department is warning that birth control has been so successful, Thailand is in danger of the population declining. Honestly, you'd never know living in Bangkok. Everybody in Asia seems to live here - could do with less people if you ask me!

Takeaways
  • News from Thailand is always funny
  • Thai garlic is in danger of becoming an endangered plant
  • Samak wants to create a 'rice cartel'.

Excelent work here. I look FWD to your "letters from Thailand each time I read your page. Tesco's, eh? First, ya steamroll your competition, and then sue anyone complaining about into the stone age. Sounds like fascism to me! I remember watching the Sex Pistol's documentary (Filth and the Fury) and guitarist Steve Jones talked about watching his parents steal from Tesco's when he was a kid, which is where he learned all his thief moves. PenPress is right: Wal-Mart does the same damn thing ever since Sam Walton died (he NEVER would've condoned such predatory business practices). Lastly, I think ALL world leaders are somewhat mad. Look at the decisions they make regarding their policies! I'm no expert in world affairs, but even I can see that their "solutions" to problems (which many leaders create purposefully in order to "solve" them) defy all rational thought! Bottom Line: a few powerful ones are getting even richer due to the fact!

Thanks for the comments - should have mentioned though, the cyclone isn't likely to hit Bangkok so we're fine here :-)

I liked the way you presented the facts..................First of all, I am glad that you were able to write this letter. Try to stay safe. My thoughts and prayers are with you...........secondly, the Prime Minister does sound crazy. Unfortunately, the whole world is presumably going to face the grain crisis..............with the birth control situation, I am speechless because I thought the words "birth" and "control" never went together in that country !...............with the Garlic situation, again, the same story, cheap Chinese products have been replacing the high quality goods. It has been the same here......................as for the actions by the big chain "Tesco Lotus"...............kind of similar to Microsoft or WalMart situation, where the other small businesses are going in the red..........great coverage....................thanks
