When you approach an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM), you are probably thinking about what you are going to do with the cash that you withdraw rather than the possibility of a potential threat. Unfortunately, however, criminals will use any method necessary to take money or good from unsuspecting victims, so you should know how to use an ATM machine safely.First of all, you should use ATM machines in brightly lit, open areas. Avoid ATM machines that are shrouded by bushes or trees or which do not allow you a safe path back to your vehicle. If you are using the ATM machine in the dark, ask a friend or relative to come with you just in case something happens.
As you approach the ATM machine, keep an eye on the scenery around you. Pay close attention to anyone standing nearby and walk away if you perceive any type of threat. This might sound like overkill, but these things happen on a daily basis. A criminal approaches a lone ATM user, jabs a gun into his or her side and demands the money. Use caution wherever possible.
You should have your keys in your hand because they can be used as a weapon, but you should also have removed your ATM or debit card from your purse or wallet in advance. Fumbling in your wallet or purse will force you to take your attention away from everything else, which can be dangerous.
When you are at the ATM machine, don’t allow anyone to see what you are doing. Even if someone behind you doesn’t see your PIN number, but sees the amount of money you have in your bank account, he or she might be tempted to try and rob you. Instead. Stand directly in front of the machine, using your hands to shield the screen if necessary.
Finish using the ATM machine as quickly as possible, put your money away, and walk back to your car. Don’t stand in front of the ATM machine to count your withdrawal; instead, wait until you are safely in your car again to make sure you’ve withdrawn the correct amount. Again, if it is dark, lock the doors to your vehicle until you are ready to leave the parking lot.
