Apropos the news item "Bush bite unto India appetite" 'Indian Middle Class Eating Too Much'( by Chidanand Rajghatta TNN/ Americans Eat 5 Times More Than Indians by Subodh Varma /Times Insight Group (Times of India, May 4, 2008) www.timesofindia.com made interesting reading.

It is very interesting to note that India's increasing prosperity lead or contributed to the present world wide food crisis. In support to his statement he provided yet another unreliable and wrong statistics. Bush should have checked the real statistic before uttering such false and irresponsible statements. It really shows his inability to look into his own home affairs. This statement will definitely let loose to a great debate and argument among people. His own administration's Department of Agriculture's 2007 figures shows a whooping figure in the US citizens consumption of food (Twice that of European Unions and three times that of China) It is really a pity thing to note the ignorance of the nation's head about his own nation's real position. How can such a person play the role of a global police? Now who is to blame for this crisis? Americans/Indians/Chinese? It is always good for a nation's head to check with the concerned department before making such wild statements.

One cannot understand what Mr. Bush meant by the word "Middle class"? Fairchild in a dictionary of Sociology writes, "is a social class resting between the aristocracy and the proletariat on the social scale" but i feel that no definition can ever pin-point the accurate meaning of the middle class, nor is it a stable section of people. Through times the definitions of the middle class has changed. Yet we all use the term freely and perhaps in the context of the current period, can say what the middle class is.

Today in India, the middle class comprises the Government employees of class III and II categories, other wage earners of the same level in private sector and the not-too-well-off farmers and tradesmen. This is the middle class-the back bone of any nation.

EATING TOO MUCH! The recent remark by the US President regarding the global price rise of food commodities is due to the fact that Middle class Indians eating more is a mere rhetoric! In his last few days at the White House he is desperate to cleanse his face in front of his people and more recently to allies in Europe, middle east and elsewhere. The American Dollar grip on the world market and commodities were such that market dynamics were dictated by its power till the advent of unified Euro currency.. so knitted into the world economy such that any burden on the American Economy would be reflected or passed on to the World Economy. Still many world economies are pegged to the American currency. The Indian Government always had and has an independent foreign policy. The Indian currency is not directly linked to the US. Recently, a nuclear deal with the US which was almost finalized is still pending to be signed by the Indian Government. The deal is delayed due to obje

Mr. Saikatt, this is not a sarcastic comment, instead it is just a cover up comment. The statistics, and the real reason behind this present crisis is just His style of functioning.

I fully agree with the opinion aired here. Bush must check his book before uttering such unpleasant and untrue statements. Very cruel joke towards the innocent Middle class people of India. I think he said this to cover his on misdeeds like converting the agricultural lands for bio-fuel plants. How cunningly he wanted to cover that. All wise people should condemn this type of tendency towards the Asians. Mats

I think it is a controversial topic !!!!, We have to understand first what Mr. Bush actually wanted to say. Whether he said about the uncontrolled growth of population that effects the food consumtion or he just sarcastically said about Indians. However, P.V. thanks for this informative article.

I really wish that Bush had concentrated more on this country, instead of "messing" with everyone else! Just a few more months. . .

Contd. . My sincere advice to the US administration is to look into the figures you are just spending on its war strategies, and converting the agricultural land to bio-fuel production, and thus distorting global food prices. Hiding this truth Mr. Bush is blaming it on other countries, especially the Indian middle class. So sad to note this again. philip

The comment by Bush reflects the idea of a rich man who fumes at a starved man eating to his full at least once in a while. Everything moves like a circle. Top will come to the bottom and the bottom will come to the top. Every man has the right to live in this world and eat his full.

I fully agree with annpverg, yes, Bush said nothing new instead its only a repetition of what the economist have been saying since long. But the point here is that he blame it on the Indian middle class for the present food crisis. Just look at this recent and simple statistic on food consumption: Average food grain consumption per person in the US is 1,046 Kg whereas it is as low as 178 Kg in India and 162 Kg in Africa. Instead of looking into the facts and figures jumping on to say The Indian middle class is eating more and this lead to the present food crisis. This is so sad.

Well said , Philip. To expect Bush to say anything sensible or based on facts, is like living in a fool's paradise. He thrives on lies and damn lies. Surprising thing is, that people of the world's strongest democracy, let him get away with his almost criminal shenanigans, sometimes! he should heve been impeached long time ago! And Condy Rice, who has become Her Master's Voice is even more nauseating. Is there hope for the world, when Bush is the only policeman/bully on the global block?

"Bush should have checked the real statistic before uttering such false and irresponsible statements" That is the way he operates!!!

Thanks for this article! That inane statement sounds like something Bush would say ("The food shortage isn't MY fault; it's INDIA'S!!!). You are right to be indignant about that stupidity. It is his very economic policies and reckless spending that got the US into the mess we're in! At least your middle class seems to be growing. Our's is in danger of disappearing!

Wow...I did not hear of this statement but I can understand why it would have rubbed you the wrong way. For all protestations about the middle class, it is vital to realize that overall it appears to be a shrinking segment of the population as a whole.

It is dangerous to be foolish. Thias is more so for a Head of State.Better discretion was warranted in this case.
