Do you like what you see when you look in the mirror? How many times this week have you used the word "fat" to describe some part of your own body? Almost all American women spend at least a portion of every day actively thinking about, and often bemoaning, our own bodies. We evaluate ourselves constantly, sometimes not even consciously. We compare ourselves to other women on the street, celebrities in magazines and on television, and even to younger, slimmer versions of ourselves in pictures and memories of our pasts. Despite the amount of time that we spend concerned with our appearance, and specifically our weight, American women are getting fatter. The CDC's Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System has evaluated trends in American obesity over the last 20 years, and the results are sobering. In 1991, there were no states reporting obesity prevalence rates over 20%. In 2003, 31 states reported obesity prevalence between 20 and 24%. 4 states reported prevalence over 25%.

I cannot believe some of the mean spirited, judgemental, hateful things that are being said about American women. These things are unfair, generalities and really quite untrue for myself and my friends and just vindictive, mean and unnecessary. I'm not overweight (age 44, 118 lbs), I don't love money or buying stuff, I don't watch hours and hours of crap TV, I go to work everyday, exercise everyday - yes EVERY day - and I treat my man with kindness, caring and respect, as he does me. And the same goes for my friends, so don't make blanket statements on our behalf like "we are lazy and stubborn" or American women are "lovers of money" . You don't speak for me and my associates.

Doug, I bow down to you. Your comment is amazing. Americans these days, not just women, are just lazy. They sit around and eat all day, then make excuses as to why they look the way they do.

Your information is wrong. It's fat hysterical propaganda designed as fear-mongering. If you read The Obesity Myth by Paul Campos or go to junkfoodscience.blogspot.com, you'll see that you can actually be fit and fat. It's physical fitness but the fascism that's already starting to take over the media and America refuses to acknowledge any balance of opinion. That you didn't dig deeper and actually try to research the crap displayed here is a sad commentary on the dumbing down of our society. Educate yourself and then relate!

"why do you need a man if you want a baby"...well usually a male is necissary to get pregnant! lol! But, seriously I think that children need to have both a male and female role model in their life, and having a daddy around is the best way to do this. (althouth obviously there are situations when this is not possible or the father is abusive etc.) I am an american woman and my fiance is not rich. However, i do plan on not working when our children are young because i believe that having a stay at home mom is what is best for children. I do plan on going back to work once my children are in school. So perhaps this is why you ppl are getting the impression that american women dont want to work??? idk

We are in a world where "to love" equals pushing food. We promote food for relaxation, comfort, stress, in order to take care of ourselves when we are stressed. Stressed, eat chocolate, it's "healthy". Need to relax, treat yourself to ice cream...I don't see as much advertisement for how good it feels to take deep breaths, stretch, sing, take walks (anything that doesn't involve much money). You have to seek out this advice. If your social, work, and family lifestyle are all people that eat a lot (even if they are active) and don't do much else for social enjoyment or stress relief, it takes a lot of work to change habits. Yes, and American women are dependent on men too much. Look at our role models such as "Enchanted" or whatever American romantic comedies. For one thing, why do you need a man if you want a baby...look at all the successful single mothers out there? Or why do you need to have kids just because you have a man? Desperate, needy, crazed society, we always need some

We all know someone who can eat as much as they want and never gain a pound... why can't the opposite be true?

To Michael comment.. dude,,you must be an American single male.. I am single, great shape, but see the same thing in American women (got money-they are interested) they all want to retire at 27, have kids, go the grocery store and have a "girls nite out" once a week.

"fat because they take in more calories than they expend. That's it." AMEN! FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT! Quit eating so much and workout more - stop your whining and excuse-making! Is it a coincidence that women in other countries are a reasonable weight? You are FAT because you EAT TOO MUCH!

also they do not know how to treat us men properly as well.

it is true they are immoral, commercial, materialistic,+lovers of money & material.instead of getting a job they rather have a man take care of them.

Thanks for writing this! It amazes me how much American women want to dance around the actual problems that are causing them to be so overweight. Diet fads, supplements, diet versions of junk food, low carb menus... it is all avoidance! Too many of us don't want to put in the work to achieve our desires, so marketing labels can wave a quick fix in front of us, and we snatch it right up! The simple truth is, we are lazy and stubborn, and we have no self discipline. THis is fine if we choose to live our lives this way, but we can't wonder why the result is a heftier body and a wider gut... maybe we need a better gut check!
