While I was busy with life, young men and women were packing their bags so that they might leave their families and friends to go out and protect our world. I have only the word of the media to inform me as to why we are over there because I was too busy with my life to pay attention. So, for me to sit in judgment of the war is probably hypocritical in some way. Instead, I have decided that no matter how much I dislike the idea of war and how much I do not understand about the objective of the war, every one of the soldiers made a great sacrifice to be there fighting it. I respect that and I believe that when we look at the losses their families have suffered, we should be thankful that such brave individuals exist so that others might enjoy some part of life. I’m not political by nature. In fact, I hate politics. I don’t trust politicians and I don’t understand why everything is so convoluted. We all know that the bottom line is how much money I can get for me when it comes to politics and we all see the little games that are played with the people on a daily basis. Gas prices are a case in point. There is no way I believe that a forty-cent rise in the price of gas can occur within a two hour period. It’s a bit much to take in. What I do understand is family. I had relatives who were in the military and it was hard to be so far away from them when they were needed in other countries.
I’m so protective of my daughter that I can’t imagine sending her, at twenty-years old, across the globe to fight for something. Fortunately, she’s only two and a half and this conflict may be over by the time she’s old enough to go. When I see stories of these young soldiers dying in Iraq, my heart hurts for their families. Many of them weren’t even old enough to drink alcohol in this country, but they died nobly while I sit here like a sloth writing stories. Some part of me feels very cowardly and selfish for not having enlisted when I had the chance.
