When it comes to barbecue cuisine, most people don't immediately think of Chicago, Illinois. They usually associate the open pit, smoky style of grilling with the southern cusp of our country, like with the state of
Texas, for example. But, just outside of the Windy City lies a neighborhood barbecue eatery that has successfully been in existence for close to 80 years. One of my favorite casual restaurants, Russell's Barbecue, is located in Elmwood Park, but is famous throughout Chicago and its many suburbs.
Most people, like myself, have been frequenting Russell's for years and even my parents recall visiting this local staple as young children. For many of us in Illinois, Russell's has delivered fantastic barbecue specialties along with a lifetime of fond family memories.
Russell's is, in fact, a family owned establishment that has seen the likes of World War II, the 1950's and a new millennium and its reputation remains stellar. Russell's cafeteria style interior is not fancy, but impeccably clean and comfortable for the entire family. The service at this restaurant is fast and friendly and the smiling, young employees appear to be members of the Russell's family. A menu board advertises Russell's many tasty choices, while tables are stocked with bottles of their famous, zesty sauce.
Speaking of which, Russell's renowned sauce is thin in consistency, but mammoth in flavor. And I think I sense a hint of vinegar in their distinctive barbecue recipe. I personally drench whatever I order from the menu in Russell's sauce and my husband loves to dip his French fries in it as opposed to the traditional option of ketchup.
