While creating unique names is a great choice for many parents, be careful not to be so different that your child ends up being the laughing stock of their class. Children are cruel and very curious. They may ask your child why he is so different or tease him because of it. Try to avoid situations like this for your child by providing the most “normal” creative variation as possible.

Learning how to write one’s name is one of the first tasks in school. However, if their name is so hard to comprehend, they will struggle and their self-esteem will lack. Other important people in their life may struggle with their name as well causing a continuous cycle of confusion for the child. This may lead to their resentment of your so-called “creativity.”

Ultimately, your child may have their name mispronounced forever. While the task seems minor, it may become irritating for a child. Whether it is in school, in their social life or at work, this will haunt them for their life time. However, the child may at first feel like an outsider, but as time continues may feel that having a unique name is a distinct part of whom they are. They may end up thanking you, but not before they lecture you on being “too” creative. Don’t do something simply because it is different. If you want to name someone Katey instead of Katie, fine. However if you attempt to create a name interesting such as Tyler to Tielyr, just don’t it.

Creativity is important in life, but too much can be overwhelming. While parents strive to find the perfect name, often trying too hard isn’t the most effective way to choose a name for one’s child. This creates confusion. Make sure the name you chose actually exists. If it is different from normal variations, they will continuously be taunted by incorrect spellings by teachers, friends, colleagues, maybe even family members!
