A span of crisp sherbet lays before you, a textured sheet of whipped blueberries, orange-cream, raspberry and lemon. I'm not talking about a delightful dessert here, but am referring to the refreshing sunsets found high in the skies of Florida's Anna Maria Island. Vacationers beware, Anna Maria Island is a relaxing paradise that will woo you, distract you and make you forget you're supposed to be a visitor; that the vacation will one day end. The unsuspecting and alert tourist might find themselves making several return trips. Here are a few activities to enjoy during your stay in Florida's Anna Maria Island.Re-learn what life is like outside of car horns, faxes and channel surfing. Anna Maria is known for its sense of neighborhood; its reminder of what essentially makes a good day. Baby powder beaches offer a perfect bed for taking in the sun and the song of sea gulls. You can spend a relaxing morning in lazy search of the perfect shell along the Gulf of Mexico; or take a tour of the north end of the island where you'll find augurs and scallops. In the grass-flats off Key Royale you'll find large whelks or horse conches on natural display. Don't know what those are? Well, it's about time you found out!
Surfing is even offered at White Avenue in Anna Maria City. Though, you won't find the Big Kahuna handing out high-fives here, you will find fair surfing challenging enough for the rest of us. Rent a scooter, bike or kayak for further exploration of the island. Or play tennis, basketball or sand volleyball to work up an appetite for any one of the island's charming eateries.
The Star Fish Company offers a filling meal starring the local catch and sides, all for just $7-15. Or experience homemade Greek & American fare, served family-style at The Gathering Place Inc. Family Restaurant. Afterwards, treat your taste buds with a visit to Euphemia Haye's where you'll be beckoned by unique pies, cheesecakes, and a sea of other desserts.
