Preserving Your Graduation Cap and Tassel

You did it! You finally graduated! You've just flipped your tassel from left to right and thrown your cap in the air. What better time to preserve them, along with the memories, than now?If you just want to preserve your cap and tassel and keep them safe from the elements such as sunlight and insects, take them to the dry cleaners. They will be able to clean them and seal them in an airtight box. A reputable company will only use acid free, museum quality materials. The down side of this method is that you won't be able to view your cap and tassel. They will just be packed away in a closet or drawer.
If you'd like to display them for a few years, you can have a professional framer make a shadowbox and mount your cap and tassel inside. Again, a reputable professional will only use acid free materials. The framer will measure your items and determine the size and positioning of your finished display. You'll be able to choose a mat color to complement both your school colors and the color of the frame. The framer will probably sew your items to the mat board. Occasionally, they will use acid free tape, but most prefer to use a needle and thread. He will help you choose a frame that is deep enough so that your items will not touch the glass. Make sure to ask for the glass that is designed to protect your piece from harmful UV Rays. A good framer will recommend this as well. Finally, he will seal the back with an acid free paper to keep any insects from getting to your treasured keepsakes.
The custom shawdowbox makes a beautiful display and will stay protected for many years, however it can be quite expensive. Premade shadowboxes are available at frame shops and craft stores in sizes 5 x 7 through 24 x 36. This is often an inexpensive alternative you can put together yourself.
