Well, I suppose an era has finally come to an end. I just learned that Columbo Yogurt, the only brand name yogurt still packaged in eight ounce containers, has jumped on the bandwagon of "downsized" containers, and raised their price in the bargain, joining Breyers, Stonyfield Farms, YoPlait and Dannon, the evil company who started all this.

How did we let this happen? Dannon was the first company make their containers smaller, and then raised the price! And people still bought it! It was at this point I crossed Dannon off my list. Soon, Breyers followed suit and got red-penciled as well. I moved on to Stonyfield Farms, and a year later, they joined this rip off club. Bye bye Stonyfield Farms. YoPlait was always in small containers, so I never even looked at it. Now they have this Dannon Activia, which is only four ounces and TWICE the price of regular yogurt, and my doctor says it is the biggest scam out there. He said if you eat one to two containers a day of regular yogurt, it's the same thing.

Since I am on Weight Watchers, and over 50, I have to eat three dairy equivalents a day and fat-free yogurt is my savior because I hate skim milk (oh, excuse, me, it's "fat-free milk" now). I am able to make parfaits with it and even found a cheesecake recipe made with yogurt cheese (drain plain yogurt for a day or two, and you get a cream cheese like result) that was half the calories of regular cheesecake, and counted as a dairy. Weight Watches defines a dairy serving as eight ounces, but even their yogurt containers are 6 ouncers.

Columbo was the last hold out. When I couldn't get that, I'd buy the store brands, which were usually still eight ounces. But now I have learned that Columbo has finally sold out. Since the store brands are harder and harder to find, I am sure they will soon return as six ouncers as well.

Shows your age that you don't think Snickers bars have shrunk! When I was a kid, Snickers, Milky Ways, 3 Musketeers, all the candy bars, they were all MUCH bigger and thicker. At least twice as big, and they were a nickel!

Funny, I've always noticed this, but never gave it much thought because I don't buy yogurt, but I've definitely noticed all the brands shrinking their containers over the years. But the classic shrinkage is the York Peppermint Patty ! Remember how huge those things were when we were kids? It's only a matter of time before they get down to the size of a quarter. It's not that they seemed bigger to kids who have smaller hands, because other popular candy packages like Snickers and M & Ms haven't shrunk.

How bout that, huh? It seems like everything has been downsized, yet we're still paying more!

That made me hungry for yogurt and mad they they downsized! It's just like the gas prices...we can't afford to live anymore.

Chuckle...you actually inspired me to open the fridge, and sure enough, my Kroger (store brand) yogurts are 6 oz.! This is good for our waistlines, of course, but bad for the wallet...I feel a bit vindicated as I only buy yogurt (and stock up) when it's on sale, this time at .39....

I agree with you totally. I mean, this is the same stuff that McDonald's did after Super Size Me came out. Kept the price pretty much the same or outright raised it and took away the largest size they had. I don't eat much yogurt, but I have seen this with tons of other products and its just plain awful.
