I don’t eat anything that had a mother, it’s that simple. (My vegetarian-ness)

When I’m bored, I like to go to Associated Content and search for some things that interest me. I type in a search word with something in mind and seem to get lost deep into the infinity that is AC. I have read so many great articles about psychology, music, Paris Hilton...(and anything else imaginable). I think the first thing I ever did a search for, though, was the word “vegetarianism”. I have been a vegetarian for over 5 years now, so I wanted to see what others had to say about this lifestyle. It lead me to a wonderful article entitled “Vegetarianism is becoming more popular” by Rachel Heller. I enjoyed the view of a “normal eater” interviewing a vegetarian. I am happy to say that the information in the article was great, however, my purpose is to expand on the subject a bit  from a first person point of view.

Although vegetarianism is widely popular throughout the world, it seems that here in Sheboygan, Wi, I am some kind of freak. (You should see the looks I get when ordering a cheeseburger with no meat from a fast food joint!) In a city of over 51,000 people, you would think the concept of simply “not eating meat” wouldn’t be so odd. The truth, however, is that the concept of vegetarianism is foreign to a LOT of people.

There are a few main reasons that a person chooses to become vegetarian. Religion is a huge factor, especially in other countries. Some people just want to be healthy. Others don’t like the idea of raising animals in a cruel manner to slaughter and consume. Although these all sound like great reasons to me, I became a vegetarian for a different reason.
