There are so many radio talk shows today, one can turn on the set and listen non-stop all day and long into the night at people talking on a variety of subjects. My station here in Memphis starts with the local and regional news. Then comes Glenn Beck, followed by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mike Flemming , Michael Savage, and Coast to Coast with George Norry.
To hear the liberal establishment talk, all these shows are right-wing ideologues who are zealous partisans for the Republican Party. While it is true that many of these people are ideologically connected with conservatism, it is Not true that they are robotic partisan cheerleaders. The day starts with Glenn Beck, who serves up a fare of hilarious parody, sarcasm, and passion. I sometimes just turn off the radio after his broadcast. I personally do not like Sean Hannity at all because I don’t think he’s a good interviewer and is not clever.
Rush Limbaugh often bores me with his pomposity and because he talks a great deal about the politics inside the Beltway. I have learned a lot from his discussions about the political process and details of how it works on the national level. However, sometimes I just get sick of even thinking of politicians in general, most of whom I regard with contempt. The utter “smarminess” of the whole profession in general and of the Beltway crowd in particular, has made a lot of people absolutely sick to their stomachs.
This is Not a classy occupation, to be sure. Then on to Mike Flemming, whom I listen to for news and in depth updates on events that directly affect my city and myself. Next and last, for me, comes Michael Savage, whom I have already written about. His is an often vitriolic and angry broadcast focused on “Borders, Language, and Culture,” his mantra for national pride and sovereignty. At least he is an independent and has a healthy contempt for the behavior of politicians in both parties, especially the Democrats. WOW. What a day of listening. But these are the weekday shows.
