In the wake of Hillary Clinton's double-digit defeat in North Carolina and her narrower-than-expected win in Indiana, former Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern became the latest Democrat to switch endorsements to Barack Obama.

Along with this announcement, McGovern made the usual noises about his deep affection and friendship with the Clintons. But, McGovern suggested, it was time for Hillary Clinton to get out of the race for the good of the Democratic Party. Obama has all but won the race for the nomination and it is time to move on.

Hillary Clinton is showing no sign of following McGovern's advice, any more than she has shown signs of following the advice of any of the many others who have jumped the apparently sinking Clinton ship to join the Obama bandwagon.

In her own mind, Hillary Clinton has no reason to get out of the race. This is despite the electoral math that is decidedly against her getting even a majority of delegates, not to mention enough to secure the nomination. Even the unpledged super delegates are now reluctant to even meet with her.

The thing is, politicians named Clinton have taken hits that would have killed the political careers of any normal politician and have survived handily. A combination of perseverance, shamelessness, and a sense of entitlement that would put a Bourbon monarch to shame have combined to drive Hillary Clinton to just within reach of the highest office in the American republic.

For years Hillary Clinton has been the inevitable one, Gloriana in Waiting prepared to lead the Democrats out of the wilderness and into the light. And now George McGovern, that loser, that dinosaur, is the latest to tell her that it is not to be. He is the latest to tell Hillary Clinton that a slick, handsome, articulate man is going to take the prize that is hers by right and by decades of hard work and turning a blind eye to her husband's peccadilloes.

This is what she must be thinking. A woman of some experience and skill (at least in her own mind) is about to break the ultimate glass ceiling and instead a less qualified man is going to be given the Presidency of the United States? It must not be!

Very good report, Mark. Shame on McGovern. It can be easily argued that what's best for the party is to send the rookie, with subversive ties packing. Ah, but typical insincere pols hitching their wagon to a percieved winning star despite what's actually best for the party...oh, and the heck with what's' best for the Nation.
