The death of someone you love is stressful enough so stressful that a person may physically become ill. In some cases a person that becomes sick within a day to a week during the aftermath of the funeral may not be sick at all but may have allergies.

Allergies are often brought on unexpectedly by the funeral plants and flowers that are received after the burial. The funeral plants and flowers are those that are bought by friends, relatives and sometimes co-workers which are placed near and around the casket during visitation and the funeral. Keep in mind that these particular plants and flowers are not the flowers that actually sit atop the casket or placed in the easels. Those particular flowers are usually left atop the grave in the cemetery.

After the graveside service the funeral plants and flowers are delivered to the grieving immediate family. The family can then do what they wish with them. They may choose to set them up in one room, spread them throughout the house or they may give some away.

Funeral plants and flowers vary. Some of them may have to be transplanted outdoors later or they may be indoor houseplants or they may be a basket of cut flowers. If all the plants and flowers are kept in one room, allergies can crop up almost overnight or they may develop a day or two later. If they are scattered throughout the house it could take a little longer to see any symptoms.

A person can become fooled into thinking that they actually have a cold or the flu if they were exposed to someone who was sick at the time of the funeral, visitations and meals. A person who has an allergy to the plants and flowers may have one or more symptoms. These are sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, runny nose, sinus drainage, sore throat, fever, chills, no energy and a tired achy body.

Takeaways
  • Funeral plants and flowers are brought to the immediate family's house.
  • Allergies can develop overnight or several days later.
  • Non-allergy over the counter medication should be switched to allergy if symptoms aren't relieved.
