Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" a Success?

If you have not heard, conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh and his Dittoheads (his avid fans) are claiming victory in the Indiana Primary. Limbaugh and his cohorts are claiming that "Operation Chaos" worked again, just like it did in Ohio and Texas.

"Operation Chaos" is the grandiose name given Limbaugh's idea of causing a little political havoc within the Democratic Party. After Senator Hillary Clinton lost 11 straight primary contests to Senator Barack Obama, Rush Limbaugh suggested in late February that registered Republicans "cross over" and vote for Hillary Clinton in states with open primaries (open primaries allow anyone to vote, regardless of party affiliation). In the manner of a gleeful obese gremlin of politics, Limbaugh, the self-styled "General" of the "Operation," hoped to disrupt the Democratic Party's primaries by inflating Senator Clinton's numbers (artificially) through crossover voting, keep her in a prolonged battle with Senator Obama (therefore potentially weakening the candidates for the general election through internecine fighting and voter disillusionment), produce a sense of unease in the Democratic Party over the accuracy of the voting (if the voting was influenced by crossover voting, who truly had won?), not to mention the true number of Democrats actually voting (which had amounted to record turnouts in every primary up to the launching of "Operation Chaos").

In Limbaugh's own words: "Operation Chaos was born primarily for the purpose assuming Obama was going to be the nominee at the get-go of this. He needs to be bloodied up politically since McCain is not going to do it. Since the Republican Party is not going to be on the field in this way, somebody's gotta bloody up Obama. The only person that can do it is Hillary, and she can't do it if she's not in the race -- and so the purpose was Operation Chaos was to keep her in the race and to have her bloody up Obama in the process of staying in the race."

According to several analysts, jcorn, it had such an insignificant impact that it was a push. One analyst stated that the difference was about 10,000 votes, so Obama would have lost anyway. I personally find this type of politicking and electioneering underhanded and distasteful, regardless of which party employs it. To tell the truth, I think they should do away with the primary system altogether. Put everyone on the ballot who wants to run and let the people vote. No party politicking crap. No "open" primaries. No caucuses, which are a waste of time. We have the technology... we can rebuild the election system... better, stronger, more efficient.... LOL...

I do think it had some impact in Indiana, based on firsthand observations and the number of voters who said they were using Operation Chaos tactics. The race was very close in that state between Clinton and Obama
