Every large City has them, yet nobody talks about them: the male prostitutes. We sure talk enough about their counterparts: the female prostitutes. So, do these men actually exist? Why did they become sex-workers in the first place?

According to one website boys go into prostitution for 2 reasons (perhaps there are more but the website didn't mention those): a. Financial reasons, and b. adventurous reasons. The first group became regular prostitutes, but the second group were a lot less regular active as sex-workers.

They are not all gay men either, and some of them have other day-jobs.

If you go into certain parts of a major town, there are areas where you see scantily dressed ladies enticing gullible (or sometimes not so gullible) men into having sex with them for money. The other males you see are not sexily dressed at all: those are either pimps or drug-dealers. They like to blend in, because of their shady dealings.

But you could be wrong in thinking that there are no male prostitutes there as well. And they could be heterosexual, gay or trans gender. And they blend in very nicely with the drug-dealers and pimps.

Why we never hear about them? According to my research it might have to do with the attitude towards female sex-workers vs male sex-workers. The women are generally seen as vulnerable; they are victims and child-like, and need to be rescued, whether they want to or not. Society rallies behind them when they are rounded up and hauled into the Police station once again. The general view is that they are in this line of business not because they want to, but because they just ended up in it. Hollywood supports this point of view: Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" is helpless and desperately needs to be rescued by a man. The female sex-worker is also often seen as exploited. (according to research there is a lot of exploitation going on: pimps who take all the earnings etc.).

I've wondered about this. And also straight male strippers.

interesting. I"ve always wondered how one goes about finding a male prostitute and how a male prostitute gets customers. It's easy for women but I imagine it's a little harder for the guys.

I've decided not to think too much about this being the piece you published right before interviewing me.
